Pheneos

Pheneos

Pheneos, one of the most picturesque mountainous regions in the prefecture of Corinthia, with its capital in the village of Goura, is rightfully known as the "Swiss Alps of Corinthia." This title reflects its natural beauty, captivating landscapes, and well-preserved sites, where human intervention remains in perfect harmony with nature.

The Pheneos region spans a vast, triangular plateau, surrounded by dense forests. According to historical records, the first settlement in Pheneos was established by the Pelasgians, while around 1900 B.C., it became home to the Arcadians. The area's history is rich and diverse, as it is said to be the birthplace of Hermes, who was worshipped as a local deity, with the Hermaea games held in his honor.

During the winter, the Pheneos plain transformed into a lake, as the waters from the Olvios and Doxa rivers had no natural outlet to the sea. These waters eventually drained through the katavothres (sinkholes) at the foot of Mount Saitas. According to mythology, these sinkholes were constructed by Hercules, and it was through one of these that the goddess Demeter descended into the Underworld to search for her daughter Persephone.

At the northwestern edge of the Pheneos plain, near the modern-day village of Kalyvakia, stood the Acropolis of Ancient Pheneos. Excavations carried out between 1958 and 1961 revealed a temple dedicated to the god Asclepius, as confirmed by inscriptions found at the site.

Next to Ancient Pheneos lies the artificial Lake Doxa, a stunning lake with a small island at its center, home to the chapel of Saint Phanourios. The locals often refer to this as the Old Monastery, as it once housed the old Monastery of Saint George.

To the north of the lake, the modern Monastery of Saint George has stood since the 17th century, when it was relocated from its original site. It played a crucial role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821, serving as a base for the Filiki Eteria (Society of Friends).

Of unmatched beauty is the Monastery of Panagia tou Vrachou (Our Lady of the Rock), built into a massive rock formation. Its chapel, set within a crevice in the rock, is always open to visitors, offering a breathtaking view of Mount Ziria.

A visit to the picturesque villages of Goura, Pheneos, Mati, Mosia, Mesino, Ancient Pheneos, Steno, and Panorama is highly recommended. Here, you can admire the traditional stone-built houses, charming mansions, beautiful town squares, and the significant archaeological site of Ancient Pheneos.
