Kastania

Kastania is an amphitheater-shaped village located at an altitude of 920 meters on the southern slopes of Mount Ziria.

It gets its name from a large chestnut forest, which was once a source of wealth for its inhabitants but was burned down during the 1821 Revolution.

The village is strategically located at a critical geographical point, as it sits at the passage from the valley of Stymphalia to the plateau of Feneos. The saddle that connects Mount Ziria with Mount Oligyrtos and leads to Feneos is called "Diasselo Kastanias."

The people of Kastania actively participated in the 1821 revolution, led by the heroic officer George Papannikas, a friend and fellow fighter of Kolokotronis, who played a key role in all the significant military events in Corinthia, including the siege of Acrocorinth and more.
