Kiato is located 22 kilometers west of Corinth and serves as the seat of the Municipality of Sikyonion, making it the second largest urban center in the region. It hosts the commercial and administrative activities of Western Corinthia, with its port playing a significant role in the area’s development, historically serving as a hub for exporting the region’s citrus products to Eastern countries. Kiato consists of the main city and three settlements: Neapoli (to the west), Tragana (to the south), and Agios Ioannis (to the east).
The port of Kiato has a primarily commercial character, facilitating the export of agricultural products and the import of raw materials for local industries. The connection of the municipality to Athens via the suburban railway, the completion of the major highway axis PATHE (Athens-Patras), combined with the national road Kalamata-Tripoli-Corinth, may potentially shift the region’s development model, affecting land use patterns (e.g., increased primary residences, additional transportation infrastructure).
Significant landmarks in the area include:
-
The Aesthetic Forest of Mouggostou, home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. This forest covers an area of 7,185 hectares and was officially designated as an Aesthetic Forest by Presidential Decree (PD 551977, published in Government Gazette 175, Series D, 261977). It is located southwest of the village of Souli in the Corinthia region and spans the municipalities of Sikyonion, Xylokastro, and Stymfalia. It is a naturally regenerated oak forest, meaning it developed independently through the natural ecological succession process. The forest stretches across gently sloping terrain with gradients ranging from 3% to 20% and faces east at the foot of Mount Kyllini (Ziria). It belongs to the Sub-Mediterranean vegetation zone. Key tree species found here include the broadleaf oak, Aleppo pine, scattered black pine, Cephalonian fir, kermes oak, holm oak, juniper, Judas tree, and the characteristic arbutus and strawberry trees. In August 1998, the first and only model meteorological tower in Greece, standing 32 meters tall, was installed in the forest as part of the MEDEFLU research project (Mediterranean Ecosystem Fluxes), managed by the Agricultural University of Athens.

The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos Lechova, situated on the eastern slopes of Mount Titan or Veseza (1,207m) at an elevation of 1,050m in mountainous Corinthia. From Kiato, the route towards the interior of the region passes through the village of Souli, then turns left towards Nemea, reaching the village of Kryoneri. Just outside the village, a fork in the road leads to the monastery (about 4 kilometers away) along a stunning route lined with plane trees. Following the gorge on the right bank of the Elissonas stream, the paved road quickly ascends to the ridge, where the monastery comes into view, nestled within the fir forest.
-
The Ancient Theater of Sikyon, one of the largest theaters of ancient Greece. Like all ancient Greek theaters, it shares a common architectural design and layout. It is located about 4 kilometers southeast of Kiato, on a hill near the village of Vasiliko, just beyond Sikyon.
