Notara Tower

A few dozen meters to the east of the Notara family mansion in Drosopigi, the ruins of the so-called "Notara Tower" can be found. In truth, the tower, as a fortification, predates the settlement of the Notara family in Drosopigi. Local tradition states that Notara, who founded the village, found the tower already built but abandoned, though he did not leave it unused. The tower has a diameter of 11 meters and walls that are 2.80-2.40 meters thick. It is constructed with locally sourced rectangular limestone blocks, and its total height reaches 5 meters. Inside, there is a cylindrical cistern for collecting water. The ground floor has neither windows nor loopholes, and it is believed that its entrance, now destroyed, faced west. The two floors were connected by an opening in the ceiling of the ground floor, and on the eastern side of the upper floor, there was an opening overlooking the current provincial road leading to Feneos.

Based on its masonry and construction technique, it seems that the tower was built during the early period of Ottoman rule, aiming to control the road from Derveni to Tarsos and Stymfalia. The English traveler Leake refers to it as "Hodja-Bashi," possibly from the Turkish name of Drosopigi, "Basi." Today, the tower is largely destroyed, but it remains an imposing structure, highlighting the significance of the Drosopigi area and its strategic position in the mountainous region of Corinth.
